Fantasy Land is the heart of the Magic Kingdom. Totally different from any other land, it has the festive look of a medieval tourney with ride entrances looking like tents against Cinderella's Castle walls. It is the busiest of all Disney theme parks with many more young children and their families than other lands and parks. Designed for added comfort and especially helpful for young children, the dark looking wide entrances are noteworthy. They are deep and provide shade where people are in lines. Bob Thompson (biography, Walt Disney, an American Legend) reports Walt wanted children to see the rides in action before commiting to going on, so the rides load outside. In addition to the helpful shade, being able to see boosts kids' patience quotients, and snakelike lines help you measure progress.
On our first trip in the early 70s, friends gave us strict orders for our first trip to the place known only as the Magic Kingdom, years before Orlando Disney property would grow to be called Walt Disney World.
"Walk straight up Main Street, straight through the castle, bear left and go straight for It's a Small World." It would set the tone for the trip, they said. For the last couple decades, when given the chance, it's the same advice I give to first-timers.
