In the background is an enormous spill of treasure all over the ocean bottom.   Priceless gold vases and urns, coins, diamonds, millions of tons of treasure almost within our grasp lay just outside the ship.   Could this explain the presence of the great serpent?   How do the mermaids keep the monster there?
